Activity: Equivalent Fraction Balloons!

–

How to play:

  • –Students come up with equivalent fractions for 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 and 1/5.

  • –These fractions are shared with the class and written onto balloons.

  • –The balloons are placed in the centre of the classroom and in each corner of the classroom are some baskets with the labels 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 and 1/5.

  • –Students are to take one balloon from the centre of the room at a time and must calculate what its simple equivalent fraction is and then place the balloon in the correct basket.

  • –This activity could be completed as a whole class or in teams to see which team can get the balloons in the  correct baskets in the fastest time.

–

–Why play bingo:

–Playing fractions bingo allows students to revise their fractions under a little bit of fun pressure. Students can relate what they are hearing to the visual representations they have drawn.
